I got interested in wedding planning after I got married and then i realized you would be giving up weekends, holidays, and evenings.....i contacted a few wedding planners myself and they gave me some good advice. You should try to contact a few and maybe you could even find a job?

I know some colleges offer certificates in event planning, maybe not specifically wedding planning (I've looked into event planning for non-profits myself).

I think a lot of the event/wedding planning business is based on experience. Maybe contact local event planning firms to job shadow or intern. That would be an exciting and rewarding career though, very different from the 9-5 office job :)

Incorporating photography might be a hassle. If you are successful as a planner you will be busy and adding photography on top of it might just take away any hints of a life. Plus, it might seem like you're trying to double your business to prospective clients.
As far as wedding planning goes, you don't have to have a degree. I'm certain that there isn't an actual degree for wedding planning, butt a business degree would certainly be useful.

Here is a link on becoming a wedding planner. I think the best bet would be to familiarize yourself with wedding vendors, bridal collections and the like.
I hope everything works out for you with your venture. Good Luck!

I have also considered doing this myself, I have been self employed for years and need a change. Here is some of the things I have come up with. People are not going to just hire us with no experience or references. One thing to do would be to put the word out with friends and family that this is what you would like to do. Have a couple of people to let you do it for free for the experience and references. You need to decide what exactly you want to do because you can't do the photography and the planning. Its not very professional, you need a nitche. Photography and makeup or planning, decorating and coordinator. Have some business cards made, drop them at local businesses that may be catering to brides. Bridal shops, florists, caterers, hairstylist, makeup artists. Need to establish relationships with people in the industry. This is what I have come up with so far. Let me know if you have any other ideas.

I would major in buisness if youw ant to be a wedding palnner with your own buisness. Accounting and computer classes would be good. You could also take some photography courses for fun and for distributiton courses, even if you don't actually take the pictures it will help with finding the good ones. Take any course that seems like it may relate. This will mostly be pbased on experience, so try working for or getting an internship with someone. This isn't really thing they would teach at a 4 year school or even a 2 year school, but it would be good to have a back up and even a couple of buisness classes would probably help. Be cautious of programs for it, I would guess a lot of "certifications" for wedding planning may just be ways to get money and to make the wedding planners sound more important.
